Ben McLemore Number 1 Draft Pick NBA 2013 by the Cleveland Cavaliers 23
Nerlens Noel was supposed to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft, but a knee injury that would keep him from playing until around Christmas 2013 placed Ben McLemore in the top spot.
Ben McLemore, who averaged 15.9 points per game at KU, will join point guard Kyrie Irving to create a powerful backcourt presence which is sure to impact the Cleveland Cavaliers overall performance. Ben's jersey number when he was a Kansas Jayhawk was number 23. LeBron James also wore the Cleveland Cavaliers jersey with the number 23 on it when he was drafted as the NBA's number one pick back in 2003. |

More Facts About Being Picked Number 1 in the NBA Draft from Kansas
McLemore is the second or third Jayhawk to be drafted first overall in the NBA draft depending on how you look at things. Danny Manning of the Kansas Jayhawks was also the number one overall draft pick in the 1988 NBA Draft (the same year KU won the NCAA Championship).
Another Jayhawk that was one of basketball's greats, Wilt Chamberlain, was actually drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors before the 1959 NBA draft even started in what was known as a Territorial pick. A Territorial pick allowed a team to pick a local player with a strong following before the draft began. This rule was in place from 1947 to 1965. |
